Fat is Expensive
When your doctor tells you to lose weight, it’s not because they care what you look like in a bathing suit. We used to think that fat was just energy stored against the future, and that someday there will be a famine so the skinny would starve and the chubby would inherit the earth.
But that famine never came. We now know that fat produces a variety of hormones, peptides, and enzymes that can have wide-ranging impact on your health. Overweight people have increased risk of diabetes, dementia, cancer, sexual dysfunction, heart disease and strokes. It costs Medicare 50% more every year to treat an obese American compared to one of normal weight. The problem is only 20% of Medicare patients are normal weight.
If we Americans lost our extra weight, most of the healthcare crisis would disappear right along with the pounds.
Estrogen is a Class of Hormones
Estrogen is not a hormone; it's a class of hormones.
Almost every living thing makes some form of estrogen, including plants and animals. But the estrogens found in plants are quite different than the estrogens found in animals. And each species of animal has his own unique mixture of estrogens. Human beings make a unique mixture of estrogens not produced by any other animal on the planet.
But traditionally, when women go to the doctor for treatment of their menopausal symptoms 95% of the time they are given a compound known as conjugated equine estrogens. These are estrogens extracted from the urine of pregnant horses, and
Type 2 Diabetes: Cure vs. Remission
With an aggressive cutting-edge program, over 70% of type 2 diabetics can be returned to normal blood sugars; normal insulin levels have no further need for diabetic medications. The question is, are these patients in remission or have they been cured?
In my practice, I have found that with a combination of innovative hormonal support, increased physical activity, and significant diet changes, most type 2 diabetics can effectively be returned to normal. I usually tell them that they have been cured. But some physicians prefer to say that these patients are in remission, because if they were to return to their old lifestyle, their diabetes may return.
But if all of their tests are normal, how can I claim that they are still diabetic? What you think?
Getting it Right: Estrogen Replacement in Women
I’ve written about this before, but it bears repeating. In spite of what people often say, estrogen is not a hormone – estrogen is a class of hormones. When a female patient comes to Longevity Medical Clinic and we start discussing Hormone Replacement Therapy, it’s critically important that we use the right type of hormones to accomplish our goal. Women can benefit dramatically from Hormone Replacement Therapy. But they need to receive human type hormone, in doses that maximize benefits while minimizing risks, and the hormones should never be given by mouth.
Cholesterol & Heart Disease Part 2
In our last blog we talked about Cholesterol and Heart Disease. We discussed how the dangerous build-up of plaque is a result of low-density lipoprotein, or LDL cholesterol, becoming damaged or oxidized in the bloodstream. The body treats this oxidized LDL as a threat, and sends white blood cells to attack the cholesterol. In order to reduce the threat of heart disease, we have to prevent plaque from forming. There are three major ways to accomplish this.
The first way to reduce plaque build-up is to reduce the amount of LDL cholesterol available to be oxidized in the first place. Reducing cholesterol is the focus of most of our traditional efforts at preventing heart disease. Cholesterol reduction is the primary reason so many millions are on statin drugs like Lipitor.
